Tunnel Beach: A Beautiful Spot for an Intimate Couples Session
Tunnel Beach is one of my favourite coastal locations near Dunedin for an intimate couples session. Just a short drive from the city, it has everything I love about photographing couples outdoors, dramatic cliffs, beautiful ocean views, rocky coastline and plenty of space to explore.
I recently photographed a couples session here and it was such a fun location to work with. The scenery is dramatic without taking away from the people in front of the camera, which makes it especially lovely for couples who want their photos to feel relaxed and natural.
Why Tunnel Beach is perfect for couples
The clifftop views at Tunnel Beach are a huge part of what makes it so special. Looking out over the Southern Ocean with the cliffs behind you creates some incredible shots.
Down on the beach, you'll find rock formations, the famous tunnel and little tucked-away spots that give you plenty of variety throughout a session. If you are lucky you may also find some wildlife which is pretty cool!
It's also a great option if you don't want your photos to feel overly posed. There's room to walk, talk, explore and simply enjoy being together while I capture everything as it happens.
Visiting Tunnel Beach
Tunnel Beach is around 15 minutes from central Dunedin and is easy to visit as part of a day exploring the coastline.
The walk from the car park down to the beach is downhill, so keep in mind that you'll have an uphill walk on the way back. Good shoes are definitely recommended, particularly after rain.
It's also worth checking the tide and weather conditions before you go. The coastline can be exposed, and Dunedin weather has a habit of changing quickly!
If you're visiting Dunedin, I'd definitely add Tunnel Beach to your list. And if you're looking for a location for Dunedin couples or engagement photography, it's one of those places that makes the session feel like an experience rather than simply a photoshoot.
