Larnach Castle Venue
Since moving to Dunedin, visiting Larnach Castle has been at the top of my list. As a Dunedin wedding photographer, I'd heard so much about this iconic venue, and I couldn't wait to experience it for myself. After finally exploring the castle and its grounds, I completely understand why it's considered one of the most beautiful wedding venues in Dunedin.
Perched high above the Otago Peninsula, Larnach Castle is New Zealand's only castle and one of the country's most treasured historic landmarks. Built in 1871 by businessman and politician William Larnach, the castle is known for its beautifully restored interiors, intricate craftsmanship, stunning gardens, and sweeping harbour views. Rich in history and surrounded by breathtaking scenery, it's easy to see why so many couples choose to celebrate their Larnach Castle wedding here.
The drive from central Dunedin takes around 20–25 minutes and is an experience in itself. As you make your way along the Otago Peninsula, you're treated to incredible views across Otago Harbour before the castle comes into sight. Arriving at Larnach Castle feels like stepping into another era. The striking stone façade, elegant turrets, and beautifully maintained gardens make an unforgettable first impression.
There is plenty to enjoy beyond the castle itself. The onsite café is the perfect place to stop for lunch or a coffee while taking in the peaceful surroundings, and the gift shop offers a lovely selection of locally made products, books, and unique souvenirs to remember your visit.
As a photographer, I couldn't help noticing how incredibly photogenic every part of the estate is. Inside the castle, the large windows fill the rooms with beautiful natural light, creating perfect conditions for elegant indoor portraits. It's easy to imagine capturing timeless wedding photographs here, whatever the weather.
Outside, the gardens are just as spectacular. During spring, the rose-covered archways burst into bloom, creating one of the most romantic settings for engagement sessions, couple portraits, or wedding photography. Combined with the historic architecture, colourful gardens, and panoramic views across the Otago Peninsula, every corner of the property offers a stunning backdrop.
