How to Prepare for a Family Session

Family with little girl

Family sessions are one of my absolute favourite things to photograph. I love meeting families and getting to know them—it’s such a special thing for me to be able to capture moments that you’ll cherish forever. I approach every session with the utmost care, while still making sure things stay relaxed and fun.

Truth be told, I still get nervous right before every shoot. I mean—you’re trusting me to photograph your most loved people: your partner, your parents, your babies. Sometimes I think about how decades from now, these photos might be shown to the little ones who are now grown up, with babies of their own. And sometimes (I know this might sound a bit sad), I realise I could be capturing someone’s last photo. That’s why I don’t take this job lightly—I want your session to be a beautiful experience from beginning to end.

That said, a little bit of planning can go a long way in making sure everything runs smoothly. So here are a few tips I’d love to share with you:

 1. Keep Outfits Simple & Comfortable

You don’t need to match perfectly—just aim for colours that complement each other, and avoid bold logos or super bright neons. Soft neutrals and earthy tones always photograph beautifully and help keep the focus on your connection. And most importantly? Make sure everyone feels comfortable in what they’re wearing. If the kids hate their outfits, it’ll definitely show!

 2. Plan Around Nap Times (and Snacks Are Your Best Friend)

If you’re bringing little ones, timing is everything. Try to schedule the session when they’re usually in a good mood—post-nap and after a snack is ideal. And yes, snacks are essential. Bring a few low-mess favourites in case someone needs a little pick-me-up during the shoot.

 3. Trust the Light

The best time for those golden, dreamy photos? Usually an hour or so before sunset. I’ll help you pick the best time for your location, but trust me—chasing the good light is always worth it. It adds a soft, magical glow that just can’t be replicated.

 4. Bring the Essentials (But Keep It Light)

Think wipes, tissues, water bottles, maybe a favourite toy or two. No need to overpack—we’ll take breaks as needed, and I’ve got plenty of experience working with families. You just focus on being present with your people.

 5. Let Go of “Perfect”

The most beautiful photos often come from the in-between moments—cuddles, giggles, windblown hair, or even a bit of chaos. Don’t worry if things don’t go perfectly. Some of my favourite images are the ones where everyone’s just being themselves. That’s where the magic lives.

At the end of the day, family sessions are about connection—not perfection. My goal is always to create a space where you can simply be yourselves, soak up those little in-between moments, and walk away with memories you’ll treasure for years to come. A bit of planning goes a long way, but don’t stress the small stuff. If you have any questions, or if you're ready to book your own session, I’d love to hear from you! Let’s make some magic together.
